WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS
APPLICATIONS AT WBC on Sunday 8 August.
Working With Children Checks are now needed for tee ball and
baseball. Coaches, Team Managers, Umpires and Scorers all need to
apply for a Working With Children Check. These are free for
volunteers but you do need to get a passport photo. To try to make
the process more convenient, we will have application forms at our
Junior Registration Day on Sunday, 8th August from 12.30pm to
2.00pm. We will also have a photographer to take the passport
photos available from 1.00pm to 2.00pm on Sunday, 8th August. The
passport photos will be $10, which is cheaper than at Australia Post
or chemists.
If you expect to be an official for a team this season, please come
down to the club on Sunday, 8th August to fill out your form and get
your photo taken or go to Australia Post and organise your
application yourself. If you are not planning to take on a team but
are likely to volunteer to assist a team once in a while, it would
also be great if you would apply.
If you already have your Working With Children Check and have not
listed Waverley Baseball Club as a group you volunteer for, please
take a copy of your WWCC card and send it to me or give it to a
Committee Member or an Age Group Coordinator.
Teachers and police officers are exempt because they already have
checks as part of their work. If you fall into one of
these categories, please take a copy of your teaching identification
card or police officers identification card and send it to me as
well.
Waverley Baseball Club operates a fantastic program for its juniors
and it is run by volunteers. We hope you will support us by
volunteering to help and by assisting us to keep our obligations to
Baseball Victoria.
VALE MRS. LILLIAN
NEILSON
- 30 July 2010
The Waverley Baseball Club extends it's
deepest sympathies to the entire Neilson family on the death of Mrs
Lillian Neilson. Along with her husband Alex, she moved to the very
fledgling area called Glen Waverley in the late 1940's. Their eldest
son Graham took up baseball in the very early years of our club in
the seniors, and his little brother Ross soon followed along in our
first junior sides. When Ross began playing in our firsts in the mid
1960's, his sister Alison then became their scorer for many years.
Lillian's grandson, and Ross' son Shaun, later commenced playing
t-ball, juniors and then seniors, and was in fact the first child of
a former junior to play at the club. Her granddaughter Dayna also
played t-ball.
Apart from providing so much towards our playing stocks, Lil spent
countless hours sewing uniforms and "Waverley" logos to the playing
tops. She was also the driving force behind our major fund raising
efforts in the early days, the Lamington Drive. The Neilson house in
Waverley Road was turned into a production line that mainly involved
the table tennis table, the kitchen, and almost any spare piece of
space left available. Eventually it became such a huge production
that it had to be moved to the clubrooms to accommodate all the
workers and their mess, but every year it raised an enormous amount
of funds to provide much needed equipment in our early years.
The funeral for Lil Neilson is to be held at
Tobin Brothers,
just near the Dava Hotel on The Esplanade, Mornington,
at 2.00 pm Monday the 2nd of August 2010.
WARNING! CAR PARK THEFTS AT WBC -
21 July 2010
There were thefts from cars parked in the
Waverley Baseball Club car park during the senior baseball game last
Saturday. Unfortunately this is not an isolated event with this
also occurring during a game in May. We are working on finding a
solution with the Monash City Council and Victoria Police.
The thefts focus on any items they can get quickly, using the 'smash
& grab' method. Therefore it is important that people do not leave
GPS systems or other valuables visible in the car to tempt thieves.
In fact you would be better off not leaving any valuables in your
car including your boot. The original attacks happened in the
middle car park but on Saturday the thefts were in that car park as
well as cars parked along the road near the first diamond as you
drive in.
Please make sure you let anyone know who might be visiting our club.
The Waverley Baseball Club is
now calling for applications for Under 12 to Under 18 Representative
Coaching positions for the 2010/2011 Season. Applications must be received
by 5.00pm on Friday, July 9th 2010.
Waverley
Baseball Club is seeking expressions of interest for people wanting to join
our Junior and Senior Canteen/Bar operations in the coming season.
Please email
the Club Secretary, Robyn Karlsen, at
robyn@infoxchange.net.aufor more
information and with details of your qualifications and availability.
There
will be a Level 1 Coaching Course held at
Waverley
Baseball Club on the 25th of July and the 1st of
August. Participants are required to attend both days. Waverley
encourages all our coaches to obtain their Level 1 Accreditation so please
enrol if you are interested in coaching in the future.
The
Waverley Baseball Club extends its condolences to the GITTUS family for the
recent passing of Ian Gittus, a much valued member of our baseball
community. All members of the Waverley Baseball Club are saddened to learn
of Ian's passing. Ian was a hardworking and devoted supporter of the club,
particularly within our junior ranks.
Ian Gittus, father
of Jeff, Glenn and Stuart, and father in law of Mark Gibbons, who all played
baseball at Waverley, died last week. Ian was heavily involved with the
Reds, mainly through his son Jeff, and was also a very great worker with our
juniors, particularly in the 1980's.
The funeral will be
held on Monday May 31 at 1.00 pm at the Policy Academy Chapel in Glen
Waverley.
Waverley Baseball Club’s Annual
General Meeting is to be held on Monday, 21st June 2010 at 7.30pm at
the Napier Park Clubrooms, High Street Road, Glen Waverley.
We have a number of positions
available on the Board this year as many of our long-serving
committee members have decided to hang up the cleats and put their
time and efforts into other areas of their lives. They will be big
cleats to fill but we are hoping there are some devoted club members
out there who would like to step up and assist in running the club.
Board and Life Membership
Nominations and any other business for the Meeting should reach the
Secretary by 5.00 pm by 7th June 2010.
Nominations Forms can be
obtained by contacting the Secretary on 9561 9937 or

The Waverley Baseball Club is
deeply saddened by the news that Mrs. Rene Miles passed away last Monday
morning, September 21.
Rene and her late husband Ron
were both Life Members of the club, with Rene being awarded her Life
Membership in 1978, and in so doing became the first female at Waverley to
be recognized with that distinction.
Their son John is noted in our
earliest records as having played for Waverley in the 1963 season, and going
on to play 201 senior games.
If you look through any of the
Annual Reports of the 1960’s, Rene’s name appears prominently as one of
those tireless workers who helped develop this club. The 1968 Annual report
for example has Rene’s name listed as being involved with the Progressive
Dinner, Bingo Night (probably not actually allowed in those days), selling
hot dogs on the Saturdays, after the game get-togethers at their home,
making of uniforms, and as she was for many years, a member of “The Ladies’
Social Sub-Committee”.
The Waverley Baseball Club would
not be what it is today without people like Rene who helped develop the work
ethic, sense of fun, and devotion to the cause whilst sacrificing their own
time. From a personal point of view I always remember Rene as being a very
happy, always smiling, very friendly and talkative lady.
To her children John and Anne,
and their families we offer our sincere condolences.
The funeral is to be held on
Tuesday September 29 at the Le Pine Chapel on the corner of Springvale and
Waverley Road at 2.30 pm.
The
Waverley Baseball Club extends its condolences to the Koski family for the
recent passing of Pops Koski, a much valued member of our baseball
community. Pops was one of the many silent workers at the club and for many
years could be found tinkering around the club until his health failed and
made this impossible. He will be sadly missed.
Sandra Lording from Frozen
Action Photography has compiled a beautiful year book for Waverley
Baseball Club.
It is a hard cover book
(28cm x 21cm approx.) consisting of 47 pages of images covering the
2008/2009 WBC season. Each of the Firsts players has a double
spread page. Pages are also dedicated to the women’s teams, men’s
senior teams (Seconds to Sixths), Chinese Taipei vs Australia
matches, Claxton Shield, Waverley
supporters, Ladies’ Day, sponsors plus more. Some sample pages
are shown at right.
A
one-off print run will be ordered on 2nd June. If you would
like a copy, they can be purchased for $130 a copy. All orders
need to be received by Sandra Lording before the 2nd June with a $50
deposit.
A
copy is available at the club bar for viewing and an order form is
with the copy.
For those many Waverley Baseball Club
people and visitors who had contact with that "nice old chap" who
has worked in our clubrooms canteen over the last several years, you'll be
sorry to hear that he is no longer with us.
Sadly Bryan Sullivan, one of our senior canteen staff, passed away suddenly
on Thursday, 26th March. Waverley Baseball Club sends condolences to Bryan's
wife, Carole, and daughter, Andrea, as well as all of the McConnon
family.
Bryan would have been delighted that
young Wade McConnon was a star in our 2008/09 Division One Premiership team
just this past weekend, just as he was proud of all his grandchildren.
One of the Waverley Baseball Club's most
popular and enduring LIFE MEMBERS Peter Wood sadly, but certainly
not miserably, passed away quietly on the night of Saturday 1
November 2008.
Many members of the club
may have heard that Peter has been battling terminal illness for
some months and he would not like to think that his passing will be
treated with sadness.
'Woody', or 'Woodsey' as some at the Waverley
Baseball Club have known him, will certainly be missed around the
club for the work, the passion and the personality he brought to the
place. People like Peter Wood simply cannot be replaced... amen!
To his family and friends we extend our
deepest sympathies.
For those wishing to attend,
his funeral is being held at:
Le Pine, 388 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley 3150 (near corner of
Waverley Road), at 2.30 on Thursday afternoon 6 November 2008.
This will be followed by
Peter's "Second Wake" at the Waverley RSL... the one he jokingly said
that "he would have to apologise for the fact that he won't be
attending!"
Farewell Woody
WILDCATS
SHIRTS BUY-BACK
In
order to reduce costs for players, the Waverley Baseball Club is
introducing a new initiative whereby the club will purchase (back) from
players any Waverley Wildcats shirts that are suitable for re-use and
re-sale to future players. This applies to shirts purchased by players
from U16's to Seniors for representative baseball.
Value of shirts will be negotiated based on the quality, condition and
"demand value" for future re-sale. In every case, the Waverley
baseball Club reserves the right not to purchase a shirt if the shirt is
of no value to the club or if a mutually acceptable price cannot be
agreed.
Interested players should contact the club on or before Senior
Presentations.
PLAYING
& TRAINING TIMETABLES Especially in
the lead-up to the Summer season, WBC coaches and players should all make
sure that they are aware of the "TIMETABLES" for usage of diamonds
etc. Coaches should arrange suitable training times with their age group
coordinator, while players who need to discuss aspects of timing for
training or playing should talk to the responsible coach. PLEASE NOTE: ALL Junior Timetables MUST be ratified by Junior
Director - Julie Wright.
Use the "LINK" provided above to view the LATEST TIMETABLES.
