Waverley Gazette Report of Wednesday, September 9, 1970.

TWO BASEBALL PREMIERSHIPS

Waverley Baseball Club won its first premiership since 1964 last Saturday, when the seconds and the Thirds both won the grand finals of their respective grades.

SECONDS

The SECONDS defeated Moorabbin 14 runs to seven, and Westgarth was defeated by the THIRDS, 16runs to seven.

Moorabbin seconds, first to bat started with strong batting and at the start of Waverley’s second innings, held a 4-0 lead.

Waverley was determined to gain the upper hand, and scored two runs in the second and one in the third.

Pitcher Dennis Fischer was gaining control on the mound and Moorabbin’s “big guns” were not firing.

Waverley batters had sized up the Moorabbin pitcher by the fourth innings, and with Ron Baskett showing the way, crashed in 11 runs with two out!

Safe hits to Ron Baskett, Bob Perry, Ian Wilmott, Dennis Fischer, Ken Berry and Greg Withers, combined with seven fielding errors by the now very quiet Moorabbin, amassed this fantastic feast of runs.

With the score at14-4, Waverley players and spectators were wild with excitement. Moorabbin tried desperately to stay in the game and strong batting assisted by two errors in the sixth innings, added three runs to its score.

Although Waverley did not score after the fourth innings, the result was hardly in doubt and Waverley did not have to use its ninth innings.

Safe hits: R. Baskett (3,one two base), K. Berry (2, one two base), I. Wilmott (I two base), G. Withers (1 two base), R. Perry, D. Fischer, P. Sparkman.

THIRDS

The Thirds grand final at Westgarth, started tensely.

Westgarth’s field held Waverley’s strong offence to four runs over the first four innings, which in return scored three runs.

However, as forecast, Waverley’s batting strength showed out with several multi-base hits, scored five runs in the fifth frame.

Waverley continued to play the baseball that earned the team top position, and the last innings saw anther five run effort which closed the book for Westgarth. Team captain John Miles said “No players could be singled out as best, because this game was truly a team with every player contributing to the result.”

Safe Hits: G. Neilsen (4, one 3-base), I. Richardson (2), J. Miles (2), K. Sparkman.
