BERG and JIMMY BERESFORD each earned nominations in
'Flintoff & Dunn's' prestigious AUST PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK
AWARDS. To visit the F&D web site for details of the awards,

Versatile Wildcat DANIEL BERG is still
producing steady offence for Minnesota’s ‘Adv-A’ Fort Myers Miracle while filling a variety of
defensive needs for his team. In the most recent series against the
Sarasota Reds ‘Bergie’ has batted 0-2 with two walks plus a run
scored while playing at first base in a 3-2 victory, and 1-4 with a
double while playing at left field in a 0-3 loss. Before that he had
a couple of terrific games in a series against the Clearwater
Phillies. In Game 1 he played at both left field and first base in a
15-4 win, while contributing 2-3 with a double, a RBI, a walk and a
run scored. In Game 2 he batted 0-1 as a pinch hitter and then took
over the catching duties in a 0-4 defeat. Back at first base for
Game 3 Danny batted 3-4 with a RBI and a run scored to help drive
his team to a narrow 5-4 win. The message is clear to ‘Flintoff
& Dunn’ that the team wins when Berg plays at first base!

Waverley
whiz kid JAMES BERESFORD is doing more than just display stellar
defence lately for Minnesota’s ‘Adv-Rookie’ Elizabethton Twins. While his daring play at
short stop will always produce the occasional “try-too-hard”
error, some of his defensive work also dazzles observers. In his
team’s most recent 5-6 loss to the Kingsport Mets in 12-innings
James batted 1-4 and was hit by a pitch. In their previous 14-9 win
he also batted 1-4 but in doing so he also produced three RBIs, one
via a RBI walk. Before that he batted a solid 2-3 including a
double, a walk and two RBIs in a 5-3 win over the Mets farm team.
However, he had one of his most spectacular moments as a pro just
prior to that series when he was the undoubted hero of the Twins
narrow 4-3 win over the Greenville Astros. In that game ‘Jimbo’
hammered a two-out, loaded bases clearing triple for three massive
RBIs in the seventh inning to grab control of the game for his team;
it capped another 2-4 game for him.
|
|
 |
Wildcats’ short stop JAMES BERESFORD
has been one of the few Elizabethton Twins players to have any
success against the tough pitching of the Johnson City Cardinals
during their latest series. In a 3-11 loss he batted 1-2, followed
by his 1-4 in a 1-6 defeat where he scored the only run for his team
and he also produced one of their paltry two hits for the game. In
his most recent outing Jimmy batted 0-3 in a tight 2-3 loss to the
‘Cards’, but he did initiate two sparkling double-plays on
defence. As I recall James used to follow the big league St.Louis
Cardinals, but he may not be quite so fond of them right now?

 |
Waverley’s ‘Mr.Versatile’ DANIEL BERG continues to earn his
keep with Minnesota’s Fort Myers Miracle, even though he batted 0-3 while playing at
third base during their most recent 2-5 loss to the St.Lucie Mets.
In the game before that ‘Bergie’ batted 1-5 with a crunching RBI
double in a 9-7 win over the Mets while patrolling first base. In
the previous 10-4 win over the Daytona Cubs he batted 0-3 but he
walked twice and scored a run as the starting first baseman.
|
|
 |
Wildcat
star DANIEL BERG seems to have settled almost exclusively into the
first base position for his Fort Myers Miracle during their recent
series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. 'Bergie' batted 2-4 with his
fifth home run of the season in a 4-8 loss in their most recent
game. Prior to that he batted 1-3 in a 0-8 shutout loss and 1-2 in 1
tight 1-0 win for his team. He is developing an impressive mixture
of offensive average and power.
|
 |
Waverley's JAMES BERESFORD seems to be
finding his stroke again lately after settling in as the
Elizabethton Twins regular short stop. 'Jimmy' batted 1-2 plus a
walk and scored two runs in E-town's 5-3 win over the Greenville
Astros. In the previous series against the Johnson City Cardinals he
batted 1-3 with a walk and a run scored in a 3-16 massacre and 1-6
with a vital RBI in a much tighter 3-4 defeat.

|
 |
Waverley
star DANIEL BERG continues to earn his stripes with Minnesota’s ‘High-A’ Fort Myers Miracle. In his most recent game Danny
hammered his fourth home run of the season while batting 2-4 with
two RBI’s and a run scored as the designated hitter in a 6-3
victory over the Vero Beach Rays. In the previous 2-5 loss to Vero
Beach Danny played at first base and he batted 1-3 with a walk. In a
6-7 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, ‘Bergie’ was again at
first base and he contributed 1-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Our versatile favourite is putting together a very solid season.

After an excellent start with his new
‘Advanced Rookie’ team, Minnesota's Elizabethton Twins, Wildcat
youngster JAMES BERESFORD has struck a bit of a
“speed-hump” lately, even though he continues to contribute well.
While he had been sharing alternate starts at short stop,
‘Jimmy’ seems to have become the preferred starter at short for
‘E-Town’ lately. However, he may be accused of trying too hard
to impress during their most recent 6-3 win over the Bristol Sox.
The stats revealed an uncharacteristic three errors for Jimbo, but
our inside mail tells us that only one of those was a play that
should have been made, while the other two came from plays where a
player of lesser range would not have any realistic chance. I’m
tipping that his coaches would prefer him to continue “pushing the
envelope”. In any case, it didn’t stop him delivering an
important RBI in a 1-4 performance with the stick. Prior to that he
batted 0-4 with a walk in a 5-4 win over
Bristol
and, before that, 0-2 in a 0-3 shutout loss to the Greenville Astros.

We are disappointed to report that another Waverley
favourite DONAVON HENDRICKS has been released after never
quite finding his feet with the El Paso Diablos in the American
Association Independent League. We know that ‘Donnie’ would not
be looking for us to make excuses on his behalf, but it is never
easy to start the season late and this can be magnified when you
also change teams and/or leagues as he did on this occasion.
He will
need a lot of luck to find another opportunity at this stage of the
season but, at 22yo, he is hardly nearing the end of his baseball
career. We’ll be looking for him to bounce back hard with Waverley
this summer and then try to re-establish himself in 2009.

Waverley prodigy
JAMES BERESFORD has sprung to life offensively for the
Minnesota Twins ‘Advanced-Rookie’ Elizabethton Twins lately, doing
his best for a team that has suffered a couple of heavy defeats in
their most recent games. Jimmy has been sharing every second start
at short stop during the early part of the 2008 season. Most
recently he batted 2-3 (.316) with a walk during a 4-14 loss to the
Johnson City Cardinals. Prior to that he hit 1-4 with a RBI and a
run scored in a 5-13 loss to the Bluefield Orioles. Before that he
batted 2-4 with a run scored in a 9-5 win over Bluefield. His 5-11
over the past week was enough to earn him an Honourable Mention in
‘Flintoff & Dunn’s PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK’ Awards this week. |
 |
Another Wildcats’
favourite DANIEL BERG has also been doing his customary team
job for Minnesota’s ‘Advanced-A’ Fort Myers Miracle with 1-4,
including a walk and a run scored as designated hitter in their 3-2
win over the Brevard County Manatees. He batted 0-2 with two walks
while playing at first base in the previous 5-3 win over the
Manatees and 1-4 as first baseman in a 2-1 win in the game before
that against the same opponent. |
 |
Wildcats’ lefty
pitcher DONAVON HENDRICKS has not seen much action for the El
Paso Diablos lately with his only recent relief outing bringing an
all too brief 0.1ip 2h 1er 1bb 0k during a “wild” 9-10 loss to the
Pensacola Pelicans. In fairness, ‘Donnie’ has not been given much
realistic opportunity to prove his true worth since joining the
American Association Independent League team late this season. We
can only hope that he gets further opportunities to establish
himself with his new team. |
|
 |
Wildcats star DANIEL
BERG added another home run to his strong recent form in his
most recent outing during his Fort Myers Miracle’s narrow 3-4 loss
to the Sarasota Reds. ‘Bergie’ started at first base in this
game and launched his line drive shot over left field with one out
in the fourth inning.
|
 |
Waverly whiz kid JAMES
BERESFORD is still acclimatising to his new home with the
Elizabethton Twins while sharing playing time during the early part
of the season as the coaches obviously want to evaluate all the
players at their disposal. ‘Jimmy’ had a strong game at short
stop, batting 1-3 with a walk and a run scored to help ‘E-Town’
to beat the Bluefield Orioles 7-1. Most recently he batted 0-3 in a
7-10 loss to the Pulaski Blue Jays while also starting at short.
|
 |
Another Wildcat DONAVON
HENDRICKS is possibly suffering from his delayed start to the
season as he finds his feet in a different league this year. In the
context of a “blowout” loss Donnie didn’t pitch too badly
while soaking up the last few outs of a 4-13 defeat suffered by his
El Paso Diablos at the hands of the Lincoln Salt Dogs. He pitched
1.2ip 5h 2er 1bb 1k (11.17ERA) with his earned runs coming via a
two-run homer.

Great news for Waverley’s JAMES BERESFORD is his immediate
promotion before the 2008 season to join Minnesota’s
‘Advanced-Rookie’ team the Elizabethton Twins for just his second
year of professional baseball. Jimmy started the season by helping
the Twins to double the Bluefield Orioles 12-6 with two walks from
his four plate appearances. He also started the season with a
double-play from his position as the team’s starting short stop…
where else? |
 |
Wildcats’ star
DANIEL BERG has suffered a lengthy and frustrating spell on the
sidelines with a variety of injuries lately, including a tender
hamstring that did not want to improve in a hurry. However, it is
great to see Danny back at the forefront of the action for his Fort
Myers Miracle, even though his team suffered a couple of losses to
the Dunedin Blue Jays most recently. In yesterday’s 5-9 loss
‘Bergie’ batted 1-3 as the designated hitter with a walk and two
runs scored. The previous day he played at first base and
contributed a terrific 2-4 which included his third double of the
season. |
 |
It was also
terrific to learn that Waverley favourite DONAVON HENDRICKS
has found another professional team after being released by the
Atlantic City Surf on the eve of the 2008 season. ‘Donnie’ was
subsequently invited to play with the American Association’s El Paso
Diablos, joining fellow Victorian Aces’ players Mathew Kent and Adam
Blackley on the squad. After a very positive start with his new
team, Hendricks has been unfortunate to find himself “hung out to
dry” by his manager in a couple of wild, high scoring games lately.
His latest outing produced nine hits from one inning when he was
just one of the Diablos’ pitchers to suffer badly in an 11-19 loss
to the Shreveport Sports. Prior to that he also took some lumps for
his team, pitching at the end of a 10-13 loss to the Sioux Falls
Canaries. |

Waverley
star DANIEL BERG enjoyed one tremendous moment in
professional baseball in the past week but, we are guessing, the
remainder of it would bring him a little frustration. Since being
re-activated from the disabled list Danny has, once again, found
himself missing occasional games or playing in a variety of
positions. While it is a valuable thing for his team to have such a
versatile player in their ranks it would not help ‘Bergie’ to
focus on his hitting as much as he might like. In the first series
against the Sarasota Reds Danny sat out two of the games, while he
batted 0-4 and scored a run in the other. In the more recent series
against the Tampa Yankees he missed one of the three games, but in
the series opener he came into the game as a defensive replacement
in the fourth inning before going on to be one his team’s heroes
with 2-3 and two runs scored. His second run came after he lined a
leadoff single in the tenth inning, then scored the winning run in a
6-5 victory for
Fort Myers
. Although Daniel took over at first base in that game, he started
at left field in his next, batting 0-4 with a walk in the
Miracle’s 2-3 loss to the Tampa Yankees. In latest outing
‘Bergie’ started at right field but he found it tough to solve
the pitching of the Jupiter Hammerheads with 0-6 in a “wild”
12-inning 12-10 win for
Fort Myers
.
However, in spite of his defensive shuffling, Danny has still not
committed an error this season!

 |
Waverley favorite DANIEL
BERG continues to prove himself very worthy of the step up to
‘High-A’ level this season with continued good form since
returning from the disabled list. In the most recent series against
the St.Lucie Mets ‘Bergie’ has built his season average up to
.321 with a couple of two-hit games. After missing the opening game
of the series Danny exploded with 2-4, including a home run and a
walk while playing as designated hitter in a 7-3 win. He backed this
up with another 2-4, including a RBI, a double and a walk while
playing at second base in an 11-3 victory. In the most recent game,
the versatile Berg split time at left field and at second base while
batting 0-4 in a 7-5 win for his team.
However, we are assured by a reliable source that Danny's RBI single
in this game was "controversially" ruled a fielding error, so he
still mae a most valuable team contribution, as usual! |

 |
Wildcats
favourite DANIEL BERG is being eased back into the lineup
with
Minnesota
’s ‘Advanced-A’ team Fort Myers Miracle after a recent stint
on the disabled list. Typically, it didn’t take Danny long to make
his presence felt offensively with a couple of important
contributions over the past few days. In his last outing he batted
2-4 (.333) as the designated hitter with a RBI and two runs scored
in
Fort Myers
’ 4-6 defeat by the Daytona Cubs. In this game he rifled two
singles into right field, one in the bottom of the fifth and another
in the seventh. In his previous game ‘Bergie’ started at first
base in a “wild” 11-10 win over the Clearwater Phillies and he
delivered one of the key hits of the game with his two RBI double to
left field in the bottom of the third inning. He was later driven in
for a run in the same inning.

 |
Waverley’s own DANIEL
BERG has made a bright start to his 2008 professional season
after immediately earning promotion to the Minnesota Twins
‘Advanced-A’ level Fort Myers Miracle. Danny continues to make
consistent progress in professional ranks and he has continued the
great form that saw him most recently star in the 2008 Claxton
Shield competition and for
Australia
in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games qualification series in
Taipei
. In his first game, ‘Bergie’ helped the Miracle to beat the
Sarasota Reds 6-3 by batting 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored
after starting at first base. Next time out he started as first base
again and he was a hero in a tight 2-1 win over the Clearwater
Phillies. In this game Danny was at the plate when the sixth inning
ended with a team mate picked off, only to return in the top of the
seventh with a leadoff home run over left field. His 1-4 (.333)
produced half the scoring for his team in an exciting victory. Yet,
while he has been performing well, he has played in only two of
Fort Myers
eleven games so far this season and we can’t quite imagine why he
has not played lately, unless he is injured?
