Report by Kingsley Collins
from Baseball Victoria Web Site:
Defending
champion Doncaster has had some problems with Waverley this season, this time being overrun
after establishing what appeared to be a winning break in a
see-sawing contest that went right down to the wire.
Waverley
struck early to lead by three after the first three innings, with
Sandra Lording in control on the hill. But the strong Doncaster
hitters came back hard and cruised to a 10-7 lead of their own, only
to see Waverley produce the “big innings” and draw out
to a 14-10 lead.
Not to be outdone, Doncaster hit back to hold a 19-14 lead that appeared – to
some – to be a winning break. But Waverley regrouped with the bat, took advantage
of some tired defensive lapses and posted another six to pinch a
marathon in which 39 runs had been scored.
“It was an exciting
game all-round,” said Waverley Coach Arthur Papanicolaou, “and we
are very happy to have got up in the end.”

“Sandra (Lording)
pitched a great game for us but she got a little tired towards the end.
We had to make some changes, and to Doncaster’s
credit they hit well and took advantage of a few errors we made.”
“It was a team effort,
although I thought we had a few stand-outs,” Papanicolaou said.
“Leanne Spencer had
three hits, Paula (Papanicolaou) was good, Maryanne Palatsides was great
behind the plate and Anne Orwin’s effort was really gutsy to play after
recovering from a broken foot not long ago,” he said.
“The crowd was great. A
really good atmosphere and they got right into it.”
“Plenty of the Waverley people came down - and Doncaster is always well-supported.”
